Cleaning codes
Water-based cleaners are fine. Use a mild upholstery shampoo or foam, sparingly.
Solvent-based cleaners only. Water can leave rings or shrink the fabric.
Either water-based or solvent-based cleaners. Sometimes written W/S or SW.
Vacuum or brush only. No water and no solvent; get professional advice for stains.
Always test any cleaner on a hidden area first, such as the back or underside of a cushion, and follow the maker's own care instructions where they differ from the general meaning of the code.
A simple routine
- Weekly: vacuum with an upholstery brush, including the crevices where the seat meets the back.
- Monthly: turn and swap reversible seat cushions so they wear evenly.
- Spills: blot, don't rub. Work from the outside of the mark inwards.
- Sunlight: keep strong direct sun off the fabric to slow fading.
Mattress care
- Use a mattress protector. It's easier to wash than the mattress.
- Open the bed every few weeks even if no one stays, to let the mattress air and recover its shape.
- Rotate the mattress end to end if the design allows.
- Don't fold the bed away with damp bedding or a wet protector inside.
Mechanism upkeep
- Open and close the frame from the centre, not from one corner, to avoid twisting it.
- Remove bedding, toys and phones before folding. Small objects get trapped and bend the frame.
- Check bolts and hinges once or twice a year and tighten anything loose.
- If the frame squeaks, follow the maker's advice on lubrication. Keep oil away from the mattress and fabric.
Leather and faux leather
Wipe with a slightly damp cloth and dry it. Real leather benefits from a conditioner suited to its finish; faux leather usually doesn't need one. Avoid solvents unless the maker approves them.
Pets
A washable throw on the sofa's favourite spot saves the fabric. Lint rollers and rubber brushes lift hair from most weaves. Keep claws trimmed if the fabric has loops.
